Rohrwindkanal Göttingen

The Ludwieg tube (RWG) tunnel in Göttingen is a research and development facility for aerodynamic experiments at supersonic and cold hypersonic flow.

Type of wind tunnel

Intermittent, blow-down wind tunnel of the Ludwieg tube concept

Main Features

Test sections

Six nozzles for distinct Mach numbers
  • 0.34 m x 0.35 m, driven by tube A, Ma = 2.0
  • 0.5 m x 0.5 m, driven by tube A, Ma = 3.0, 4.0
  • Ø 0.55 m, driven by heated tube B, Ma = 5.0, 6.0, 6.8

Operating range

  • 2.0 < Ma < 6.8
  • P < 3,600 kPa
  • Re0.1√(S) < 3.5 x 106
  • T < 670 K
  • Run time < 0.4 s

Model support

  • Horizontally and vertically movable swords for rear sting models and probe support
  • Extensive fittings and adapter for individual model and probe mounting

Auxiliary systems

  • Schlieren system
  • Germanium windows for infrared imaging

Typical tests

  • Fundamental research of fluid dynamic phenomena and effects in supersonic to cold hypersonic flow (shock/boundary layer interaction, cross flow jets, flow control devices, etc.)
  • Design optimization and aerodynamic data of missiles (nose optimization, interaction of body, wings and control surfaces)
  • Configuration studies and evaluation of re-entry vehicles (heat load)
