A wind tunnel test for an Ultra-High Bypass Ratio turbofan inlet at off-design flow conditions was performed at the DNW-LLF in September last year.
Inlet separation characteristics during cross-wind fan operation were captured by PIV flow field measurements inside the inlet.
Inlet performance at cross wind conditions is vital to ensure stable and reliable operation of the next generation of efficient aero-engines. The NIFTI (Non-Intrusive Flow distortion measurements within a Turbofan Intake) EU CleanSky 2 project has developed non-intrusive techniques for inlet characterization in large-scale industrial scale facilities. The wind tunnel test has generated a unique dataset capturing the highly unsteady nature of the inlet flow distortions right in front of a rotating fan.
Thanks to the testing team and all NIFTI partners for achieving this wonderful result!
